In Gideon and Amy Cande/e we can follow the movement of our direct ancestors migrating away from Connecticut. Gideon's parents, Caleb and Lois (Mallory) Cande lived in Oxford, Connecticut and they were farming people. Both are buried in Jack's Hill Cemetery in Oxford, Connecticut. But as we followed Gideon and Amy we found out that they were buried in Volney, New York. This led us to learn more about Volney and their particular journey to upstate New York.
By 1806 Gideon was one of the first settlers of Volney. "In 1810 he was appointed a Justice of the Peace. In 1812 he was appointed Poor Master. He was also the first deacon of the First Congregational Church of Volney formed in June 1812," we hear from Esther Rancier on a genealogy forum.
And when we read "A Semi-Centennial and Memorial Discourse" from the 3rd of July 1881, Volney, Oswego County, New York we learn from the speaker that Gideon Candee and his son-in-law Gideon Seymour took up land in Volney having come from Paris, New York. Paris was Oneida County while Volney was designated to be in Oswego County. Paris had been taken from Whitestown (formed in March of 1788) in 1792. To say that in addition to the movement of our relatives there is much movement of boundaries and territory layers with which we are also concerned.
Interestingly, how we personally found the memorial discourse (Volney 1881) was by working our way backwards through descendents. We'd just discovered that one of our Michigan men, George H. Candy, was the son of Caius Marius Candee and we happened onto his letter written as testament to living the good life...in the compilation of materials assembled for "A Semi-Centennial and Memorial Discourse." When we first perused the materials we really didn't grasp the weight or value of what such materials mean to a community and to history preservation. We add our thanks to Dianne Thomas to the growing appreciation of all her hard work!

For a few days we really struggled with a grand confusion about ASA Candee. The Asa we were trying to follow (around the country it turns out) was a son of Gideon and Amy. We had to do some date analysis and plenty of scrap note writing to piece Asa into the puzzle, and, at some point we basically slid down a mudhill, completely lost our balance, and exuded no small amount of see-wearing--the kind a person doesn't do on a Bible. Our frustrations were compounded by there being an Asa Rand Candee who we were not familiar with at all because we'd already wandered away from the Caleb Crossroads in our research. There was Caleb Candee who married Lois Mallory and had nine sons. And there was Caleb Candee who married Anna Sperry.
Rather than pass on the confusion with simplistic graphics here, we are just forewarning the possible confusion on the trails!
