Frame of Reference: The Descent and Ancestry of Isaac Calvert of Greene Co, PA
Here is how I characterized the Cresap connection the last time I spoke of it, and the first time providing the notes of John Conklin, now this Anita Calvert Bourgoise, and ALvah Headlee.
Part 1: A General Outline for Isaac Calvert who came into Greene County Before
1793.
References to Calverts settling the sandhills area of now West Va. Along with Michael Cresap are noted. We know there is much to learn about how Isaac Calvert and his sons came to Greene County, Pennsylvania and when.
Captain Michael Cresap established a fur trading post in the upper reaches of the Potomac River and by the time of the St. Clair Massacre Isaac Calvert had established himself in Cumberland Township, Washington, Co, PA. This later, in 1796, became part of
Greene County. Alvah Headlee, provided notes about how the family came west, noting that John, Williamm and George were brothers who were among the early settlers. Headlee mentions that John Calvert came from Philadelphia to Western PA and was associated with Thomas Cresap. I believe that he mistakenly identified this Cresap as Thomas who was famous on the border of PA and MD related to the boundary disputes at the time of the Mason-Dixon survey and should have indicated Michael, both known as Captain due to their ranger and frontier exploration and settlement.
Back to the story line: John had at least brothers William and John. The family story that is passed down is that these people came via Maryland into what is now Greene County PA. There is also material provided by Wiley Lemasters about the families being neighors back in Maryland, with the description of this as being the same area of Maryland as the Lemasters who populated what became West Virginia Counties as the Calverts of my family line. Indeed we find a piece of land owned by Richard Lemasters in St. Mary’s County. Richard’s father was Abraham Lemasters who immigrated from France and Calverts Hope is the neighboring property. I have never been able to locate though the names of the Calverts who owned this land.
In the Lemasters USA, chapter 12 of which relates to the Calverts and Lemasters families of Tyler Co VA later to become Wetzel County WV, was contributed to by Wiley Lemasters. In the book, it deals with two John Calverts who end up in Tyler coming out of MD to Western VA. The Lemasters to be dealt with are 3 John Lemasters and they also migrate finally to this area, but starting out in Western VA, migrating to SC and then back to Scott county and jumping over the Appalachian Divide into Keyntucky.
From this point it is easy to follow one of the John and Eleazor Lemasters who were brothers and sons of one of the other two John Lemasters—They could isolate one of two John Lemasters as being the father of the pair who used Scott County VA as a Jumping off point to the west.
So here we have story lines of the Lemasters family tying the families together back in MD and saying that the families end up in Tyler County VA. At the same time these Lemasters of Tyler are related to those who end up in Scott Co VA and move into Kentucky. How they are tied as kin is not evident to me. See the letters of Wiley Lemasters which are appended to this website.
Part 2: John Conklin’s view of this Calvert family
John Conklin’s notes on the Calvert Genealogy as it relates to descendants of Isaac
Calvert of Greene County PA.
John Conklin wrote in a letter or brief about his ancestry. This document was filed with the Cornerstone Genealogy Society housed in the Old Greene County Courthouse annex. The annex is attached to the back of the original log structure of the courthouse.
This document may have been part of a letter written to Dorothy T Hennen, as it was
Apparently in the collection of files she had left at the society. There were also notes about Anita Calvert Bourgeiose noted in the margins.
The author, apparently writing to Dorothy Hennen states:

Part 3: The Notes of Alvah Headlee – Librarian Waynesburg, PA
Title) The Calvert Family Lineage (this apparently in the hand of Alvah Headlee. The Charts match the method he used in preparing the Headlee Genealogy book which he
Published. I have gone over his book and other documents but found no further information on his Calvert line. His papers are filed at a library in Greene County at Waynesburg. Another research trip is necessary in order for me to pour over what materials are to be found.)
He wrote:
George Calvert and his brother John Calvert, Brothers of Lord Baltimore. The Younger came from ENgland to the Colony of Maryland in 1691. George Calvert, Born in Sussex in 1661 was one of the three Surveyors that surveyed the south plat of Baltimore in 1714 and was a local guardian of the law from 1701 to 1708.
He had a wife, three sons - William, George, John - 2 daughters Cecilia and Mary.
William Calvert, brother of George Calvert, came from their home in Sussex England to Baltimore County, Maryland in 1705
and wasthe agent of the Lond Fur Company in Baltimore 1706 to 1719.
(now this indicates these brothers came out of Sussex and would tie William, George, and John as sons of a John Calvert)>
John Calvert, son of George Calvert, born in England in 1686, came to Baltimore with his parents in 1691. He was an inkeeper in upper Baltimore town 1721 to 1730. In 1722 he,
with Dr. Samuel Eckerlin, made their way to the middle of the Potomac River regions and purchased some prime furs and it was through this first trading with the Connechnee Indians that the Lond Fur Co set up their first Fur post and trading house at "Long MEadows" in Frederick Co., Md. in 1726 (end of page 3)
(Beginning of page 4)
and in 1728 placed Col. THos. Cresap there as their agent in 1728 who continued there until 1745.
John Calvert married Margaret Robinson in 1717, and from records they had three sons, Resin, William & Cecil and 2 daughters, Elizabeth & Mary. Elizabeth Calvert was married to one Samuel Lewis and settled in Philadelphia and later in Chester Co.
Resin Calvert, son of John Calvert, Born in 1722 married Harriett Bryan and settled in Frederick Md. in 1750 and had 3 sons William B.1753-July 22
Thomas B. 1755
George B. b1761
1 daughter ? B1767-M.John Founer in
william, Son of Resin grew up in Frederick, Frederick MD.
County,Md.-located in Bedfor, PA.1775. He was a Revolutionary war soldier in 1777&1778- again in 1781.
In 1777 he married ? Wheaton(given name not found).
Thomas Calvert b 1784 came to Greene Twp. Greene Co PA in 1808. was a millwrite by trade. He assisted John Carter to repair the Col. John Minor Mill at Mapletown in 1811. In 1813—(I believe here, Headlee misidentifies the Thomas Calvert who was the ancestor of my family line. I have proven that Thomas Calvert was b 1769 and died 1868. Headlee was apparently confused with Thomas Calvert of a different family line who was born 1784).
Page 5 has the following information, no signature.
this letter was continued on another page and I don't have a copy of that page. it stated he built a mill which was 1 of 51 mills in Greene Co Pa at the time of the 1820 Census.

(this short paragraph is pretty much as how I transcribed the small bit on the last page of this letter or notes of the author. No signature....(deb))

Add to this the descent of the Dulaney-Furlong book, the letters of Ida Calvert 1921, Dale Harlan with whom I have exchanged information, now living in Washington State, the letters of Wiley Lemasters, John D Calvert's News Article Waynesburg, PA in 1881, John Shepherds two articles in the Wichita Beacon 1912, The letters of Lorena Brown, The letter of Dr. Benjamin Calvert to AT Calvert in Kansas City Ks, Cindy Owens Family data showing John Calvert b c 1742 Eastern Shore MD(haven't recieved word on any document she has)...John Calvert b 1766 lived in Baltmore and married there, then move to Bald Eagle Valley...Ben Calvert letter again.
My own research on the Calverts of Somerset-eastern Shore.. uncovered Isaac Calvert born 1747/8 to Alexander Calvert and Mary Wheeler. However, I have also demonstrated that this Isaac is not the Isaac Calvert of Greene County, PA. The process of elimination now comes into play: The only other possible Isaac Calvert who could have arrived at Greene County in 1793 is Isaac Calvert of Chester County, PA—the son of Thomas Calvert b 1717(my date) who married Sarah Williamson in Chester County PA in 1739.
Part V: The Book: Furlong-Dulaney and Kindred Families
My grandfather’s sister married William Thomas Cleveland “Teed” Dulaney. In this reference, an appendix deals with the ancestry of the Calverts as it relates to the Dulaney’s. This book, Furlong-Dulany and Kindred Families in the appendix shows:
1. George 1
2. Cecilius(1) b1605
3. Charles b1637
4. Benedict Leonard b 1679
5. Cecilius(2) b1700 –(little is known of this Cecilius, no known marriage or children)
6. Isaac b 1735(shown in 1810 census of greene co.PA) m Fanny Bullitt
7. Ezekiel m Rhoda Debolt (does not show my line, Thomas, brother of Ezekiel)

Tramping through the forest of family tree we find ourselves finally reaching way back and finding Daddy's Way Backs. So we'll put his long ago ancestors in the same space with Mama's Way Backs in our web cluster.
Welcome to the Way Backs' Website!
"The poetry of history lies in the quasi-miraculous fact that once, on this earth, once, on this familiar spot of ground, walked other men and women, as actual as we are today, thinking their own thoughts, swayed by their own passions, but now all gone, one generation vanishing after another, gone as utterly as we ourselves shall shortly be gone...This is the most familiar and certain fact about life, but it is also the most poetical, and the knowledge of it has never ceased to entrance me, and to throw a halo of poetry around the dustiest record." --George Macauley Trevalyan quoted by Ballen
